It all started one day when I arrived at our new office area and noticed the installation of new EV chargers. Little did I know, this observation would lead to a fascinating conversation about parking, rules, and diversity.

As a Tesla driver, I typically don’t need to charge my car during the day, so I parked at the end of the parking area with no charger. However, in the midst of the parking area, I noticed a combustion engine car parked in one of the EV charger slots. This immediately caught my attention.

Later, while chatting with my colleague Jacob, who owned the parked car, we found ourselves staring out the window at the parking area. Jacob shared that he had received a warning message about parking in the EV area but argued that since there was no specific parking rule in place, he felt entitled to park wherever he pleased.

This sparked a discussion about cultural differences in rule adherence. In Danish culture, clear rules are often expected and followed without question. However, in Turkish culture, where I come from, rules may be more ambiguous, but certain unwritten norms are still widely understood and respected.

In Turkey, for example, it’s understood that traditional cars should not park in EV charging areas, even if there isn’t a specific sign indicating so. This cultural understanding guides behavior without the need for explicit rules.

Reflecting on our conversation, I realized the value of diversity in bringing different perspectives to the table. While Jacob approached the situation from a Danish perspective, I offered insights from my Turkish background. Neither approach was inherently right or wrong, but they highlighted the importance of clear communication and mutual understanding.
